Publication Design for The AjA Project and The Majdal Center in San Diego.
THE CHALLENGE
The AjA Project and The Majdal Center wanted to create a booklet spotlighting Arab-owned businesses in El Cajon, San Diego, while also honoring community-made artwork from "Letters from a Future," a project where community members designed postcards using imagery of El Cajon and Arab culture. The publication needed to weave together business profiles, interviews, and grassroots artwork into one cohesive piece, all within a tight deadline and across two organizations with their own goals and timelines.
THE SOLUTION
I designed and helped publish the booklet, working closely with both organizations to align on content, structure, and visual direction. I built the layout around the community's own postcard artwork, giving it a central place in the design rather than treating it as decoration. Working alongside a team member handling interviews with community members, I coordinated across both orgs to keep the project on schedule and ensure the final publication represented the community authentically, on time and ready for distribution.
